Paper and pads
What paper is in the standard 9x12 sketchbook?
One hundred sheets of 68 lb (100 gsm) acid-free, pH-neutral drawing paper with a fine tooth for dry media. The pad is top-spiral bound and every sheet is micro-perforated.
Can I use watercolor in a regular sketchbook?
A damp brush over watercolor pencil is fine. For real washes use our 140 lb cold press watercolor pad or a 300 gsm hardcover pad, which hold water without rippling the way thin paper does.
Can both sides of the marker pad be used?
Yes. The 73 lb marker paper is coated so alcohol ink stays near the surface, which gives you 200 usable sides in a 100-sheet pad.
Do the pages tear out cleanly?
They do. Our spiral and hardcover pads have a micro-perforated line near the binding, so a sheet comes away with a straight edge.
Pencils, markers and pens
Are the colored pencils pre-sharpened?
Yes, all 72 arrive sharpened and ready. The cores are soft, so use a sharp blade sharpener and a light twist when they need a new point.
Are the alcohol markers refillable?
Several of our alcohol sets are, including the 120, 168, 262 and 320 colour sets. Each item page says so in its details.
What tip size are the gel pens, and how do refills work?
The tip is 0.8 to 1.0 mm. Every set has 60 pens and 60 matching refills; unscrew the barrel, swap the ink tube and the pen is new again.
How do I start a dot marker?
Remove the cap and press the sponge tip onto scrap paper a couple of times until colour reaches the surface. After that, one press makes one dot.
